Summary

The head men's lacrosse coach is responsible for the direction and organization of the Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse program. The coach is responsible for the recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes, supervision of coaching staff, practice planning, player skill/leadership development, fiscal responsibility and alumni cultivation. The coach is expected to demonstrate leadership, sportsmanship and conduct becoming of the coaching profession. In addition, the coach should maintain a professional and cooperative relationship with the College's faculty, working together for the benefit of the student-athlete. The coach is expected to annually review any rule changes relative to the sport and to always adhere to all rules, regulations and policies of NCAA Division III and the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan game and practice sessions in accordance with NCAA Division III rules and regulations.
  • Recruit quality prospective student-athletes and ensure timely submission of their academic records for admissions.
  • Organize and conduct an appropriate number of practice sessions and direct all activities during contests.
  • Coach team members, individually and in groups, and demonstrate game techniques.
  • Develop and implement game strategy and position assignments.
  • Oversee the strength and conditioning programs for student athletes.
  • Provide an environment that supports the achievement of the academic goals of the student athlete.
  • Identify prospective student-athletes, evaluating high school prospects, and maintaining accurate records and a database in Front Rush.
  • Responsible for meeting the college-identified annual recruiting goal for the program 12-14 recruits

Administrative

  • Prepare a schedule of contests and team activities in conjunction with the director of athletics that complies with departmental policies, goals and objectives
  • Coordinates the scouting and video film online exchange through HUDL.
  • Administer the sport budget in a fiscally responsible manner; submit all purchase requests to the director of athletics for prior approval. Develop program's fundraising strategies.
  • Coordinate team travel, housing and meals and submit a travel itinerary prior to the start of each season.
  • Communicate and cooperate with the equipment manager regarding the distribution, collection and purchasing of athletic equipment and supplies.
  • Manage the development and coordination of community service projects for team members.
  • Cultivate alumni groups associated with the program in conjunction with the office of alumni programs.
  • Complete secondary duty as assigned by director of athletics likely game manager of a fall sport

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of NCAA Division III rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of computers and athletic-related software programs
  • Knowledge of effective strategies which focus on helping an individual improve their skills and performance
  • Knowledge of recruitment to a NCAA Division III athletic department
  • Skill with the setting of learning goals and action planning
  • Skill in instruction of student athletes with fundamentals and principles of the sport
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions
  • Skill in developing leadership skills within a team and athletic department
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Supervisory duties

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position is responsible for supervision of 1 Intern Coach and 1-3 Part-time or Volunteer Coaches.
