Carolyn Kyler, Ph.D.

Carolyn Kyler is a professor in the Department of English and director of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program. She teaches a range of courses in American literature, African American literature, and gender studies. Some recent courses taught are American gothic, American women poets, contemporary American historical fiction, Whitman and Dickinson, the Harlem Renaissance, African American autobiography, theories of gender, graphic memoir, and doctors as writers. Dr. Kyler’s scholarly interests include African American literature, illustration, historical fiction, American women writers, and gay and lesbian studies. She has published articles on the Harlem Renaissance, graphic memoir, Louisa May Alcott’s fiction, gay and lesbian issues in the workplace, Sandy Boucher, and contemporary historical fiction. She is past president of the College English Association.
