Walter Elder, M.A.
Instructor of Mathematics
Academic Program: Mathematics
Mr. Elder grew up in Oil City, PA. and earned a B.S. in Applied Mathematics & Physics, as well as a M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh. He also completed a Teacher Certification Program in Secondary Math Education and the coursework (but not the comprehensive exam or dissertation) for an EdD in Mathematics Education at the University of Pittsburgh.
In addition to teaching at Washington & Jefferson College, Mr. Elder has taught at Perry Traditional Academy in Pittsburgh, Triangle Tech, the University of Pittsburgh (Main & Greensburg campuses), Pittsburgh Technical College, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Penn State Beaver, and Slippery Rock University. He also spent two years working as a curriculum developer at Carnegie Learning Inc., finding that writing instructional materials to assist students in learning math to be one of the more gratifying aspects within his teaching.
His hobbies include watching Rugby, (having played for 15 years with Pittsburgh Harlequins R.F.C.), keeping his ‘63 Chevy Corvair alive and street legal, Woodworking, and spending time in the woods & water with his two dogs- Gus-n-Newt.
