French

Major / Minor

Spoken by more 200 million people on five continents, French is a globally important language of trade, culture and political systems and it is the second most commonly taught language in the world. French students at W&J learn the skills necessary to communicate in culturally appropriate ways with French speakers of diverse francophone communities. Courses range from beginning language to advanced topical seminars and immerse students in discovering “la francophonie.”

Our Mission

The mission of the Department of Modern Languages is to impart to all W&J students the skills, knowledge, and qualities necessary to communicate and interact in culturally appropriate ways with speakers of languages other than their own. The Department of Modern Languages is, therefore, a key component of a liberal arts education and serves the mission of the College by preparing students to become observant, responsive, and knowledgeable actors in our increasingly multicultural and global society.

Beyond the Classroom

In addition to advanced French courses, French majors study abroad in France or Québec for at least one semester. Semester- and year-long programs are offered at USAC-Pau, Sciences Po-Aix, and the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. While traveling and studying in Francophone communities, students develop their language skills and become immersed in Francophone culture.

We also offer summer Magellan projects and study abroad opportunities in French-speaking countries. There are also Jay Term courses in January or May that provide more chances to travel abroad.

Students in the French program may also be eligible for membership in the Pi Delta Phi French Honorary Society.
