The Russian program prepares students to communicate and interact in Russian-speaking cultures and communities and focuses on geographic and cultural awareness as well as language learning. W&J students who minor in Russian Area Studies can expect to reach the intermediate or advanced level in Russian by their junior year, and must take at least one advanced-level language course to graduate. In combination with other disciplines, knowledge of this widely spoken world language opens myriad opportunities for our students.

Our Mission
The mission of the Department of Modern Languages is to impart to all W&J students the skills, knowledge, and qualities necessary to communicate and interact in culturally appropriate ways with speakers of languages other than their own. The Department of Modern Languages is, therefore, a key component of a liberal arts education and serves the mission of the College by preparing students to become observant, responsive, and knowledgeable actors in our increasingly multicultural and global society.
