WASHINGTON, PA (Dec. 14, 2015) — For the second year in a row, a Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) student has been the recipient of a scholarship from the German American Business Circle of Pittsburgh (GABC/Pittsburgh).
Angela Nied ’17, an international business and German double major from Murrysville, Pa., will use the $2,500 scholarship to pursue her dream of studying abroad next semester at the University of Cologne in Cologne, Germany. She credits her advisor, Michael Shaughnessy, Association Dean of Graduate Studies and International Programs, with encouraging her to apply.
“This scholarship will help me to immerse myself in the German culture,” said Nied. “It will allow me to have opportunities to connect with people and job opportunities over there.”
Last year was the inaugural year for the GABC/Pittsburgh scholarship and it was awarded to W&J student Aric Brown ’17. The scholarship is designed to benefit college students in Western Pennsylvania who demonstrate excellence in the areas of German culture and business. It will be presented on Nov. 30 and is to be used to attend an accredited German university.
Nied plans to take business and German classes while she is there and also hopes to improve her skill in the German language. During her time in Cologne she plans to network with different businesses in hopes of getting a taste of the German business world.
“German businesses are very organized and known for being extremely successful,” said Nied. “American businesses tend to look up to them because of that success.”
After graduation, Nied is considering graduate school and plans to enter a career in marketing.
“I would really like to thank Dr. Shaughnessy for giving me the opportunity and helping me to apply for this. I would also like to thank Sarah Kochuba in the Office of Study Abroad. She helped me a lot, too,” said Nied.
