WASHINGTON, PA (July 19, 2017) – Members of the Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) Environmental Studies Program can better serve as global eco-ambassadors, thanks to a grant award from the Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment (LIASE).

Funding from the LIASE Grant allows students and faculty members to take on projects and programs that promote Asian studies within the context of environmental studies. The program grant supports student knowledge of Chinese culture, language and environmental challenges as well as student travel to and research in China.

Faculty partnerships with Guangdong Education University, Qingdao University, Sino-German Eco Park, China University of Petroleum and the Chinese Academy of Forestry will give students the opportunity to travel to China and expand their education.

Through the LIASE Grant, students have opportunities to spend up to two months doing funded research in China. Environmental Studies Program Director Robert East, Ph.D., encourages interested students to check out more information on the program on the Environmental Studies Program’s webpage.

“Students with interests in the natural sciences, social sciences, physical sciences, arts, and humanities have found a home in the Environmental Studies Program. The Program is enriched via involvement of students from diverse backgrounds and interests,” East said.

Other partnerships with W&J’s Center for Energy Policy & Management, as well as with local and national environmental advocacy groups, the program supports ambitious students who identify viable opportunities in renewable energy, environmental justice, and environmental policy.
