WASHINGTON, PA (Oct. 2, 2015) – The first week of October is German Week at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) and a grant from the German Embassy will ensure a series of events that will educate and inspire W&J students, alumni and the community.
Through October 1-11, W&J will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Germany on Oct. 3, 2015 with historical displays, German films, trivia, German food, chances to win prizes, and other fun activities to help celebrate German Week.
The W&J Department of Modern Languages received a grant from the German Embassy to have German Week at W&J, and this is the third time the department has received the grant. W&J Assistant Professor Cathy Altmeyer, M.A. is one of the organizers for the week-long event.
“The German Embassy sent an awesome display of posters depicting the story of German Reunification. It’s an inspiring story of peaceful change,” said Altmeyer. “In addition, the library will have on display East & West German memorabilia, posters depicting the various ingenious methods that East German citizens used to flee to the West, and posters of East and West German propaganda during the separation of Germany.”
W&J will be very busy during German Week, and this is a great way for the community to be involved with German culture, said Altmeyer. A full schedule of German Week events is listed below, and is available on the College’s Event Calendar.
“Our community will be able to get a real feel for these important historical events,” said Altmeyer.
